The Build
Doug Keim Creative Cycles is no stranger to celebrity motorcycle builds. And anyone who has been around that world long enough knows it comes with layers — layers of management, layers of handlers, layers of people standing between the builder and the man whose name is going on the tank. The Funk Master Flex build was no different.
The word came down through the proper channels. Aston Taylor Jr. — known to the world as Funk Master Flex — wanted a custom Harley. Doug never spoke to Flex directly. The brief was passed along, clean and simple: he wants it to look like a Harley, and he wants it to be red. That was it. The Motor Company supplied DKCC with a brand new Street Glide, and the creative team went to work.
The concept was the same one Doug has applied to every celebrity commission — don't lose the Harley flavor. It still had to be recognizable as a Harley-Davidson. But it had to be custom enough to be cool. So both front and rear fenders were replaced. The fuel tank was swapped for a stretched version, matched with a stretched dash. CVO-style saddlebags were fitted and adjusted. Contrast-cut billet wheels, rotors, fork legs, and accessories were added throughout.
Then came the audio. Doug got together with Stephen from Lux Restyling to modify the bags to house large speakers and amplifiers — because any self-respecting music superstar is going to need serious sound. A new audio head unit with additional amps and speakers was placed in the fairing, complete with a wireless remote. Open those saddlebags and you'll find a custom-made cover hiding all the amps and electronics tucked inside. And where you see the Creative Cycles, Lux, and Rides logos? It's backlit. Very cool doesn't quite cover it.
The engine received H-D Stage 1 upgrades and a true dual exhaust system. Then it was time for paint. Look closely at the candy red and you'll find the FMF logo ghosted down the center of the bike like a racing stripe. It's one of those details you might miss on a dimly lit street — but get it under a streetlight or in the bright Florida sun, and it screams at you.
The seat was the final touch. The FMF logo was stitched into a hand-crafted leather seat by DKCC's Costa Rican Richie — the same hands that have been doing the leather work at Creative Cycles for years.
As for Funk Master Flex? Take a look at the photos. He seems like a very happy and very proud guy. Think they nailed it?
